Parish Pastoral Council

Canon Law 536.1 “…a pastoral council is to be established in each parish, over which the pastor presides and in which the Christian faithful, together with those who share in pastoral care by virtue of their office in the parish, assist in fostering pastoral activity.”

The Parish Pastoral Council exists as a consultative body to help the parish priest consider pastoral and other works and to propose and co-ordinate practical measures for implementing them.

The Council acts as one means by which the parish community can have its voice heard:

Canon Law 212.2 – The Christian faithful are free to make known to the pastors of the Church their needs, especially spiritual ones, and their desires.

Canon Law 212.3 – According to the knowledge, competence, and prestige which they possess, they have the right and even at times the duty to manifest to the sacred pastors their opinion on matters which pertain to the good of the Church and to make their opinion known to the rest of the Christian faithful, without prejudice to the integrity of faith and morals, with reverence toward their pastors, and attentive to common advantage and the dignity of persons.

Parish Finance Council

The Finance Council is a consultative body which provides the parish priest with advice concerning the stewardship of parish fiscal resources, especially in light of the objectives of the Parish Pastoral Council.

Canon Law describes the Parish Finance Council as follows:

“In each parish, there is to be a Finance Council to help the parish priest in the administration of the goods of the parish. It is ruled by universal law and by the norms laid down by the diocesan Bishop, and it is comprised of members of the faithful selected according to these norms.”  (Canon 537)
